City Warns Residents of Scam Regarding Property Taxes

Release Date

The City is alerting residents to a scam involving individuals impersonating the Mayor to solicit personal information and money related to property taxes.

City staff recently became aware of a case in which a resident was contacted by someone posing as the Mayor via text message. The scammer falsely claimed the resident had been selected to receive a property tax discount and requested sensitive information, including a copy of a property tax notice. The individual was instructed to send payment upfront in order to receive a fabricated reimbursement.

City officials emphasize that this was a scam. The City does not offer tax discounts, and neither the Mayor nor Council have the authority to override property taxation legislation. The City will never contact residents via text message to request personal information or payments.

Residents are reminded to:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited messages requesting personal or financial information
  • Avoid sharing documents such as tax notices with unknown individuals
  • Verify any suspicious communication by contacting the City directly
  • Report suspected scams to the RCMP
  • Report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at their toll-free number 1-888-495-8501

The City encourages anyone who may have received similar messages to contact the RCMP. If you require clarification regarding your property taxes, please contact City Hall at 250-828-3311.
